Although ruminants do not require as many carbohydrates as monagastric animal, these carbohydrates are still important components of a steer’s nutrition (Bowen, 2006). Butyric acid, similarly to acetic acid, after absorption into the blood is oxidized in a variety of tissues (Bowen, 2006). These volatile fatty acids produce approximately seventy-percent of a steer’s energy supply and are thus their production by rumen microorganisms is of great importance (Bowen, 2006). In rumen microbes, organic compounds, including carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, are broken down via fermentation. Thus, the rumen microbes utilize the cattle’s feed to survive and reproduce (Hungate, 1975, p. 44).

In 2019, dairy cow feed consisted of 39% corn and 16% DDGs (Dried Distillers Grains). In addition, soybeans account for 13% of consumption when combining soybean seeds and meal. Adding DDGs (other processed byproducts) to corn’s share represented 70% of all feed tonnage given to dairy cows in 2019. While dairy cows are given some hay and grass, it makes up a smaller percentage than corn, soy, and DDGs. In 2019, dairy cows consumed 83.2 million tons of alfalfa and hays, in contrast to 93.3 million tons of corn products, 7.5 million tons of soybean products, and 3.1 million tons DDGs. It is believed that birds can get extra nutrients from dirt and soil, which would be particularly useful when producing eggs and rearing young.

Pelleted diets are especially important with psittacines, to avoid self-selection of calcium-deficient seeds. They have a versatile digestive system that allows them to break down a variety of different foods. Some common examples of omnivores include humans, bears, and raccoons. Pigs require a balanced diet that contains plenty of essential and non-essential amino acids. While essential amino acids are important to support a pregnancy, sows also require dietary glutamine and arginine9  to support mucosal integrity and neonatal growth, respectively.
